MAN Engines and Components

iSea - the Components are as follows

All components of the new iSea marine electronics
from MAN Engines are perfectly matched to each other
and intuitively designed. The iSea class marine-electronics are
also available for classified applications.

iSea e-box

The e-box is the heart of the iSea system. For this reason, every engine is assigned its own e-box for engine monitoring. It collects all the engine data and compares them with permanently stored target values. The e-box incorporates an alarm system. For classified applications a safety system is also installed, which operates independently of the alarm system.

Where values deviate beyond the permissible tolerance limits, the alarm system triggers actions. These are warnings, alarms or alarms accompanied by reductions in power and reductions in speed in order to avoid consequential damage as far as possible. The optional safety system provides separate additional monitoring of the engine and in the event of an alarm triggers an engine stop. The safety system is a redundant system which, in the event of any defect in the alarm system, continues to provide a minimum monitoring of the engine.

Components of the iSea e-box

The main board

is the motherboard for the control boards and distributes all internal/external signals from and to control units in the system.

The control board for the alarm system

controls, regulates and monitors the engine operating parameters and the drive train parameters. It reports faults and supports the marine-specific components necessary for visualisation and operation.

The control board for the safety system

contains all redundant sensors required by classification societies in addition to the alarm system. These include stop alarms, independent speed sensing and redundant displays for the local control position. The power supply is also provided separately.

The plug board

is the central connection point for external connecting cables such as engine cable harnesses and provides the link between these signal connections and the components listed above.

The internal throttle lever control MPC (Marine Power Control); (optional)

(not shown here) communicates with the associated throttle lever by means of a CAN data bus.

The engine compartment display for the alarm system

shows the operating values of the engine, gearbox and exhaust gas aftertreatment system (if present), local engine functions (start/stop; gearbox ahead, neutral, gearbox astern; speed +/-), display of the contents of diagnostic log entries, access to the engine settings.

The engine compartment display for the safety system

shows the operating parameters of the engine which are supplied by the safety system sensors that are independent of the alarm system.

iSea bridge display (optional)

The iSea touch-screen colour display is designed to display the operating values of the engine, gearbox and exhaust gas aftertreatment system (if present) of a MAN marine diesel engine. If a value reaches a critical level, depending on the importance a warning or an alarm is triggered and shown on the display. If the value is outside a certain range of plausible limit values, a sensor error is displayed. An in-built buzzer issues an acoustic warning signal after each new alarm indication; this signal can be terminated by pressing a button.

The MAN Engines display uses the same IPS display (In-Plane Switching) technology as the leading mobile phone manufacturers. The IPS display therefore offers the widest possible viewing angle so as to allow important information to be seen even away from the control position. The iSea bridge display – of mature technology and exciting design – was awarded the “Red Dot Award: Product Design 2020".

To meet the requirements of the user, there is a choice of several languages: English, German, Spanish, Italian, French, simplified Chinese, Russian. The display is protected front and back to protection class IP 66/67 and is thus sufficiently watertight to be used even on an open bridge. An integral sensor allows the bridge display to sense the brightness of the environment and automatically adapt the background lighting of the display to the conditions. In direct sunlight the display achieves the best legibility by means of a high light density.

iSea convenient throttle lever (optional)

The iSea convenient throttle lever controls the speed an the gearbox of single-engine drives and multi-engine drives on boats – even at more than one control position. For dual engine drives the following conditions are displayed in the control display for port and starboard, using six LEDs: command, warm up, synchro, trolling, slip & grip, alarm. In addition, warnings and alarms can be output by acoustic signals. Due to its proven use even on open bridges, protection class IP 66 is obligatory.
